UNE information

UNE, CORDAY's first large scale steel work, is a three ton form beginning the artist's PROTOIST SERIES. PROTOIST is a term coined by the artist to describe the intermediary state between the known and the unknown. This sculpture is hewn from raw weathering steel and stands nearly 9ft tall with the arc spanning more than 16ft. Each piece in the PROTOIST SERIES is meant to engender direct physical contact, not only to be touched but to be worn down over time by the tide of human interaction. A 3ft notched void running through the center of the arc replicates the coarse edge left in the torch-cut steel. This allusion replaces the artist's hand, or the stroke, in an otherwise mechanical process and alludes to the sensory power of touch reframing what would otherwise be viewed as an imperfection.

Each form in the PROTOIST SERIES is meant to be touched, to be entered, and even to be walked upon. UNE will remain installed under the Highline for three weeks before heading overseas for future exhibition.

CORDAY currently lives and works in New York City and has work in permanent collections in Dubai, Dublin, Mexico City, and Paris. CORDAY is currently workingon the production of a monumental outdoor form, INSTRUMENT FOR THE OCEAN TO PLAY, that harvests tidal energy to power a low-frequency sound.
